The Psychology Department offers introductory courses to get a general overview of the entire field. Other courses, which represent different areas in psychology, offer more detailed surveys of specific Sub-fields: Cognitive, Developmental, Neuroscience and Comparative, Personality and Psychopathology, Social, and Women’s Studies.

Admission: To be admitted to the Psychology major, students must receive a grade of B or better in two courses taken in the Psychology Department.

Requirements: Ten credits are required for the major.

Introductory Psychology: These courses provide a broad overview of psychology. Either PSYC 101 (Psychological Science) or PSYC 105 (Foundations of Contemporary Psychology) is required.

Psychological Statistics: These courses provide an introduction to data analysis in psychology. Either PSYC 200 (Statistics) or PSYC 201 (Psychological Statistics) and PSYC 214 (Psychological Statistics Computer Laboratory) is required.

Research Methods: These courses provide specific skills with which to evaluate and perform research. One course in methods of research is required — either PSYC 202 (Qualitative Methods in Psychology) or PSYC 203 (Experimental Methods in Psychology).

Core Courses: Courses in this group provide an understanding of different sub-fields of psychology.

Three courses chosen from the following list are required:

PSYC 220 Cognition

PSYC 230 Developmental Psychology

PSYC 240 Biological Psychology

PSYC 250 Personality

PSYC 251 Understanding Psychopathology

PSYC 260 Social Psychology

PSYC 270 The Psychology of Women

Specialized Courses: These courses (PSYC 300-380) aim to ensure that students study at least one sub-field of psychology in depth. A student must take one specialized course in a sub-field in which she or he took a Core Course.

Electives: Any other courses, tutorials, or teaching apprenticeships offered by the department, or any courses approved by the chair, may also be counted toward completion of the requirements.

Additional Information:

Advanced Placement credit: Students who receive a score of 5 or 4 and complete a full-credit Core Course may receive 1.00 credit. AP credits may not be counted toward admission to the major.

Grading: All psychology courses must be graded A-F, not credit/unsatisfactory.

Transfer credits: Only 3 transfer credits from another department or institution can be applied to fulfill requirements for the major only if approved by the chair. Even though a transfer credit may have been approved towards university credits, it must also be specifically approved towards the psychology major. Transfer credits cannot be counted towards admission to the program unless you are a transfer student.

Transfer students: Transfer students declaring a major must receive a B or better in two psychology courses from their previous institution.

Tutorial credits: No more than 4 tutorial credits can be counted towards the major.
